I just started using this free program. I think it's great. Maybe he could get "A Catholic Guide to the Bible." http://www.amm.org/chss.htm

I had the same trouble... overwhelmed by the number of pages and number of stories and just the complete, confusing massiveness of the Bible! Then I read The Book of God (the Bible as a novel) by Walter Wangerin, Jr. (published by Zondervan) and it was like a light went on inside my dim brain Smile After reading the Bible written as a novel, when I went back to the real Bible, what I read made sense. I wasn't disctracted by verses and numbers and lineages, etc. because I understood the big picture and I was able to really appreciate the Bible for the first time. I know Zondervan isn't Catholic publisher, but aside from having some of "our" books missing, I thought this was an excellent interpretation and a big help in my study of the Bible.
